Travel insurance 'top ups'

I've just purchased an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy. The policy comes with various add-on options like winter sports and hazardous activities. At the moment I haven't purchased these add-ons as I understand I can include them just before I travel if needed. However, whilst the cost will be pro-rata, apparently my insurer then includes them for the rest of the policy i.e. I would still end up paying for something like 8 months worth of winter sports cover if I decided to add that to the policy in 4 months time.
I have a trip coming up where I might do something that's classed as a winter sport for a single day. I'd want to be insured to do that, but I probably wouldn't need the cover for the rest of the policy. There seem to be companies who offer 'top up' insurance i.e. if you have a policy which doesn't cover a particular activity, then they can cover you for a single activity for a short period of time. This might work out to be more cost effective, particularly as the winter sports add on with my actual insurer is quite pricey.
Does anyone have experience of these products, or know of anything similar that might be worth considering?

I feel with something like this you should always speak to a professional, especially if you're taking part in a high risk sport, even if it is for a day. I have cover for my winter sports as I take part in them constantly, I took my cover out with sports financial services it might be worth speaking to them about this? Hope this was of some help have a nice time on your holiday!
