Negotiating a discount at a dealer

Would you consider it a bit underhand to initially have a dealer think you want to buy a car on PCP, in order to get the 'dealer contribution' or discount on a car, then once the discount is offered, say you'll pay cash? I have heard this often works as dealers get comission from the finance companies when they sell a car…

I saved myself about £2,500 by signing up for a PCP deal and then settling it later. It is not underhand at all and I explained to the dealer what I was intending to do. She was quite OK with it, but did ask me to wait three months before paying it off, presumably so that she wouldn't lose her commission. I was happy to do that.
