How to settle? Scratched another car while parking a rental - no damage to hire car. Left note

We scratched another car in our hire car while parking in a tight space. No damage at all to our hire car, they're happy with condition of it after checking and have refunded deposit today after returning.

Other car has paintwork scratches (obviously can't see if any other damage). We left a note for them and took pics and they've been in touch.

We'd prefer to settle direct with the other driver Vs through insurance, assuming cost to fix isn't outrageous, but they're asking for car reg and name it's registered in. Obviously it's a hire car we returned so probably registered under them?

We didn't think to tell rental company because our car was undamaged, but wondering if the other driver wants to go through insurance what insurance details do we give? Car hire insurance (Enterprise) or our excess insurance (purchased annual policy separately)?

Is it better to pay up ourselves or go through insurance? Though if other driver wants to use insurance then we presumably have to.

All happened in UK with driver who has UK driving licence.

You’re only obliged by law to give your name and address, those of the owner, and the reg. number.

But as you could not supply those details at the time, you should have reported it to the police.

I’d suggest using your own excess insurance, and keeping the hirer out of the loop.

If the hire car was originally covered under the hirer's policy and OP's own insurance realises that (because OP did not ask their insurance to cover it at the time), is OP's own insurance likely to play ball?
