Car hire in New Zealand (Jan to Feb '24) - tips and recommendations

Greetings MSE lovelies. We're planning a trip to New Zealand, flying out just after Xmas 23 for approx 6 x weeks. We're looking to hire an estate/station wagon style car (both pick up and dropoff in Auckland) for about 25 x days and travelling to both North and South Islands. I've had a look on travel supermarket and Mode rentals come in relatively reasonable at around £1100 (NZ$2200). Any car hire companies that people have had good/bad experiences with? Also, any car-hire excess insurance policies that people would recommend? Thanks in advance...
