Buying a house thats not for sale?

We bought our current home after putting flyers through the doors of it and the 5 flats alongside it. we got responses from 2 - 1 of which we knew was for sale, and the one we now live in, which we didn't. I'd personally go for that approach rather than knocking on the door - my immediate default reaction to someone coming to the door and asking me that sort of question would be no I suspect because as someone else has said it would seem a bit strange. A flyer though would get read and if the idea of moving had even crossed my mind might well make me think. Strangely enough, when we viewed the other flat we actually didn't like it, whereas as soon as we stepped inside ours, it just felt right!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

I haven't met with the owners yet but while arranging the meeting they mentioned that the house is 'not freehold yet but still morgagable' but this confuses me.Its listed everywhere as freehold so I ordered a downloadable copy of the title deed and it says 'Title absolute' which means its 'freehold' right? The title would have to say if there was a lease right? There is some old covenant listed from the 1890s that no more than 4 dwellings can exist on the plot and an agreement made with the old Reverend that the house cannot be turned into a brewery of intoxicating liquors or masseur !!!!!! or used for anything 'noxious' or 'offensive' to other locals.I'm wondering if the owner means theres those historic rules instead of 'leasehold'.0
