Card that can be used straight away?

I've been disorganised/too organised depending on which way I look at this! Last year I had a credit tidy up and cancelled unused credit cards. I thought I still had one kicking around for emergencies but turns out I didn't keep one open after all. I was hoping to pay a few quid of a holiday balance on one for the section 75 cover. I unfortunately only have a few days to pay off the balance for the holiday, so I've realised too late to apply for a new CC, I thought I had one I could bung a few quid on for the protection.

I vaguely remember once getting either a credit card or bank account debit card where I was able to log in immediately and see the card details and use it straight away after opening the account, without waiting for the physical card to arrive... But I can't remember where this was from. Does anyone know of a credit card I can apply for that will allow me to make online purchases before the physical card arrives? Otherwise I'll just have to pay the full balance with my debit card and forego the section 75 protection, but worth asking first

NatWest seems to allow this now with their latest update. Both of my cards were added after midnight, so not instant, and I can now see the card details in the app and can also add it to Apple Pay. I've been using Apple Pay so far.

Ah that's perfect! I already have a NatWest current account so that could work brilliantly! I'll have a look into it, thanks so much

Or you could take out travel insurance which is designed to offer this kind of cover.

Depending on how you have booked the holiday S75 tends to be very limited given most book via agents which therefore breaks the D-C-S chain that cannot allow third parties.

Travel insurance, as mentioned above, gives much broader coverage and indeed having no S75 protection makes the insurance claim easier too.

I second the Natwest comment. I applied at the weekend and was able to view the card details in the app - once I confirmed my face and fingerprint. I was then able make a large online payment just now, early on Tuesday morning.

Chase account gives you debit card details that can used straightaway - literally as soon as you complete the online application. You also get 1% cashback up to £15 per month. That's a debit card not credit card but still has some protection I think - chargeback?

But, that costs money - putting it on a credit card (if the balance is paid off in full) costs nothing.

Travel insurance would cover other possible issues with the holiday, which the s.75 wouldn't.

    Personally I'd have both.

I'd hope Miss.Twizz has long since enjoyed her holiday without any issues requiring the use of S75 or holiday insurance.

I found this thread from a Google search as I had a similar need for a credit card quickly. It helped point me to Natwest, I would not have known they put the card details in the app so quickly.

So the thread is not just for Miss Twizz's original question.
  • Metro Bank indicate they do a credit card issued same day if you can visit a branch - however that is not convenient for much of the population due to their geographical locations.
Nothing north of Bradford in England, only Cardiff in Wales, nothing in Scotland or the Six Counties of NI.
So much for their heralded being a new UK bank when they opened in 2010.
