Broken car - need to insure if not currently in use?

Hi
Our 2018 plate car has completely broke down, it’s been 8 weeks now without it and it has been with the mains garage who couldn’t fix it, and is now back with the dealers where we bought the car from. No one seems to be able to get power back into the car and the dealers have 6 weeks left (they informed us they have 8 weeks to repair it, we have had the car less than 6 months when it broke down) the insurance renewal is due in a few weeks, my question is; must I insure the car that isn’t in use nor is it with us? I don’t want to not insure it and we are liable still but if something happened to the car whilst with the dealers I assume the dealers would have insurance for this? Any advice would be great thanks!

Also we are assuming the car won’t be fixed and we will be refunded!!

So long as it is taxed, it has to be insured.

If you're confident that (1) the dealer won't take it on the road (even to park) without trade plates, and (2) that they're insured for damage to your car, then you can SORN it, and cancel the insurance.
