Car Tax refund after write off
Advice please, I was involved in a rta. Rear end shunt in mid June. Car was pretty much written off straight away by Axa, no doubt si before it had even been assessed.
The car has been deemed a cat s and offer was made by CoPart the salvage firm. They are trying to under value the car, but that is a moan for another day. I am trying to negotiate as they will obvs try to claim market value but pay as little as possible.
As we near the end of the month, and tax rebates are only full months, could someone advise my options in terms of getting a refund of my car tax which has 5 months left. As it will not be coming back to me, and currently sat in a salvage yard, is there a way to apply for the refund now or do I have to wait for insurance payout/ownership transfer, or do I have to sorn it. It’s all not clear.

At some point you will be asked to fill out the V5 section showing transfer to whoever is going to deal with disposing of the car. You will get the refund then. I suppose you could SORN it if you are sure it will not be driven again before you transfer the ownership.

Ah ok thanks. No it’s not drivable, so won’t be driven again by me or anyone unless it is repaired. It’s sat in a salvage yard.wongataa said:At some point you will be asked to fill out the V5 section showing transfer to whoever is going to deal with disposing of the car. When our car was written off the insurance company advised us to send the appropriate part of the V5C and send it to DVLA then send the other part to them
