Hope someone can advise on this as it is stressing me out, my son was a student 20/21 and had an EON Next prepaid meter, he topped it up regularly and took Martins advise and put in £200 just before the rates went up in 21, when he vacated his rented flat thee was a credit of £43 which they refunded to him. Last week July 2023) he had an email to say he owed £676.95, he messaged them to say this must have been a mistake, they said they would investigate it as it could have been a previous tenants debt, when he asked for the refund he asked for the cheque to be sent to his home address as he was moving out of the flat. They have written to him at this address asking for the money or it would affect the credit reference, I cannot see how he would owe this as he topped up regularly and had a credit at the end, i don't know what to do

Well you don't need to do anything as it's your son's problem and he's the one that will need to deal with Eon.  (yes I know you're happy to help him and can do so if he informs Eon he authorises you to do this.)

Does he still have any bills/correspondence from that time?  Readings for the meter when he moved in and out, better yet pictures of the meter?  Anything from the landlord to show when he moved out?

Do ensure that Eon is informed that the debt is being disputed.  Do a subject access request as a debt of that size must involve bills for an account that "he" supposedly signed up for somehow.

You would be better asking one of the forum ambassadors to move this thread to one of the debt help  sections of the site.
This part of the forum deals with unfair parking charges.

Why is this being discussed in the Parking Fourm?

Contact a forum ambassador, linked at the bottom of every page, and/or use the report button and select move/combine, and say where you want it moved to in the text box underneath.

    ... i don't know what to do

I'd start by asking EON Next to send a proper bill by post, so your son can see exactly what they think he owes them for.

I'm starting to see problems like this popping up frequently ,  with OVO too, when someone on prepayment moves out , they get a large bill for unknown reasons. Even if the meter used the emergency , this is taken off the next topup, so I don't know how they can ask for money.. Also OVO claims is standing charges, again total lie
    It's very alarming
I wonder if this is happening after the government voucher prepayments and somehow they want to make more money , even though it was government money. not theirs
I personally had to fight for my vouchers, 3 months they didn't send me any

No, it's mistakes and occasional incompetence.  It's not a scam or conspiracy.
