Thank you Jem16, molerat, GrizB and p00sticks
    and I am receiving 31years.
79/80, 85/86, 87/88 were years when i did not accrue enough NI contributions. 84/85 and 86/87 i had no contributions. They are checking 97/98 and 98/99. During all this time i was receiving child benefit
I really want to know what the exact portion is regarding non-full years and search as i might on Google i can not find this information. I keep getting directed to HMRC 'check your contributions' which does not give me the information i am looking for.
Thank you all for helping me so far. I will contact tax service but think i need to know my rights before i do
Another thing that worries me i have no record of Child Benefit numbers, though my husband reckons he still has bank statements from then!
I’ve asked the person who told me about it and hopefully she’ll get back to me when her visitors have gone. From memory HRP had to be credited for full years so if you worked even a week or two and paid NI you didn’t get a credit for that week so lost the whole year. This affected anyone reaching SPA before 6th April 2010 when HRP changed to be NI Credits. Although all my credits were under the HRP system, I was ok as they transferred those credits over to the new system where you could have years made up of some NI Credits and some from actual paid employment.

thanks all, still worried about the years they haven't counted. If i add up the years they did count it came to 31 which is the numbers of years i get. They are looking into 2 years.

No bank statements from that time unfortunately so it appears i have no proof of receiving child benefit.

I wish there were i number i could call to get my child benefit number

Are the 2 years they are looking at the ones where you did do some work and paid NI?

when i count up the full years and add 9 years for pre 1975 it comes to 31 years which is what i get.
They are looking into only 2 years for me and i would like to query at least the years for which i did not work while caring for children.
I think the trouble started when i got back from abroad

Finally found the appropriate changes. HRP was only awarded for full tax years so if you did a bit of work even if only for a week or two you lost the credit. NI Credits which replaced it was awarded on a weekly basis so you could combine periods of work with periods of credits. This only affected those reaching SPA prior to 6th April 2010 as HRP credits were converted into NI Credits for those reaching SPA from 6th April 2010 onwards.

    Info from Page 11 onwards.
