New carpets - a couple of questions

I need new carpets in the bedrooms and have two questions….
1. The doors/built-in cupboard doors are already quite tight to the existing old, very worn carpets so will need to be trimmed to allow them to open freely when new carpets and underlay are fitted. What’s the best way for this to be done? Remove the doors before the carpets are fitted and ask a carpenter to trim them and rehang them afterwards? Ask the carpet fitters to do it?
2. I have already had a measuring up visit from one carpet company and was told that the width of two of the bedrooms is literally a couple of centimetres too wide for a standard width of carpet. (I think he said the standard is 3 metres). Rather than have a lot of waste by using a wider carpet, he suggested putting a join in the carpet. Please can anyone tell me exactly what that would entail and would it be obvious?
Sorry if I’m being dim! I don’t have much experience of new carpets.
Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Standard width carpet 4m or 5m
So are you rooms wider and longer than 4m
Where is he going to get the piece to join dependng on the style of carpet if he adds to the length the pile might prevent a good join

Re Doors - it would be better to take them off before carpet is fitted. You could ask the carpet fitters to trim them, but they aren't joiners - they might be able to do it. If you know someone who is a handyman, they might be able to do a good job. Or a joiner.
The carpet fitter sounds like he's trying to save you some money - if you buy a piece that is 4m, and you only need 3.02m, you would be paying for virtually a square meter extra along the entire length. Unless the room is an exact 3.02 m square, then the off cut of the side would probably be used to fill the gap to the end. It could work - you are best asking them how/where they intend to put this joint and how obvious it will be. Also depends on the cost of the carpet and your budget. Personally I would pay the extra to not have a joint.
Have you tried a local carpet shop - we have one near us, and they often have an off cut that they'll supply cheap so they can free up space. They are local as well, so more likely in my experience to to need the good word of mouth recommendations.

Don't get carpet fitters to do it. They might do it, but it'll never be as good and I'd be surprised if they do it anyways
  • Thank you for your replies and advice. I will follow up by getting several quotes from carpet fitters and also handymen/carpenters.

Standard widths are often a fraction over. So if you get a 4m roll, you might find the actual width is 4.05m. Carpets also have a little stretch in them, so another few millimetres can sometimes be gained during fitting.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

I had a guy trim our doors in-situ (without removing them) after carpet installation.
