Downpipe position

We have a downpipe that is off centre from the gully. It has a connection to cover the sideways distance at the bottom (on an angle) to prevent pooling but wonder if this would be better placed further up?

The gully itself is flush with the house at the back but the downpipe sits away from the wall due to pebble dash and house design so in heavy rain the water runs out the shoe and beyond the gully.

We can't really extend the downpipe below the gully grid as the neighbours feed pigeons and lots of feathers and moss fall off the roof and down the downpipe so we need to be able to catch the debris.

I'm thinking either reconfigure so there is no shoe (and it falls down closer to the house but still in line gully with a slate behind to prevent splashback) or fitting a gully surround although I have no idea how to do this.

Would really welcome any thoughts or suggestions.

  • We had a similar issue with the downpipe from a garage roof. The shoe deposited about 50% of the rainwater outside of the gulley. There was only one sure way of fixing the problem. We extended the downpipe (by replacing it with a longer section) so that it terminated well down into the gulley.

If you have a pigeon problem, deal with it separately by discussing with your neighbours.

You can get D/P filters that are pretty unobtrusive. Search for things like 'downpipe leaf separator filter'.

    Thank you both.

I think the pigeons are here to stay unfortunately. Do the leaf traps work? I'm a bit worried in heavy rain it would be another hole for water to rush out off.

If you up for a bit of digging, it is (in my opinion) well worth fitting one of these - https://www.floplast.co.uk/product/leafdebris-interceptor-gully - Traps most of the crud before it gets in to the drain or soakaway. Easy to clear out. Downside is it does involve soe grunt work to install, especially if the area is surrounded by concrete. Some additional expense is needed for P traps and clay pipe connectors if you have old pipework in the ground.
