British gas credit payment

I've just received a cheque from British gas for £40 saying I am due a credit payment from your previous energy supplier. I've never been with British gas previously and i'm currently with Scottish power. I rang them up and they said it was probably an old account I had but could not help me as I currently don't have an account number for them to look up. Is this legitimate? It's an hour round trip to pay a cheque in so I don't want to waste my time if its fake? It look genuine and I've checked online the HSBC banking details on the cheque and it says British Gas. Any ideas?

Were you with any failed supplier in the past even if you left them before they failed ?  BG took over responsibility for some of these and they are still being sorted out years after they failed.
No banking app to pay the cheque in with ?

The cheque is unlikely to be fake.
Do you remember which energy companies you have had over the past six years?
We've had other threads where people have also received unexplained BG cheques, and the general opinion is that one of the failed suppliers had lousy records.
Re. paying in the cheque, some banks let you deposit them via their app (by photographing the front and rear of the cheque). That's how I have paid in cheques in recent years. Does your bank offer this?
If not, you could consider opening an account with one that does.

You can probably pay in the cheque at a post office or post it to your bank.
