Quote for new blocked paved area and patio

I'm getting quotes to redo a paved area and patio at the back of my house which would involve approx 56 square metres of tegula block paving and 52 square metres of Indian sandstone patio.

It also involves lowering an existing 20 square metre area of patio by about 30cm to level off the area.

My first quote for the job is £18,700, which is higher than I was expecting. I'm in Glasgow, so not London prices.

Is that quote roughly what you would expect to pay for this type of job?

Roughly 110 square metres so a cost of £170 per square metre.  Indian sandstone approx £25 per square metre, block paving similar cost.  Add to that the ballast etc required, groundworks, removal of waste etc, etc.  and the price doesn't seem particularly excessive.  All you can do is get other quotes and compare.  Don't be tempted by a particularly low quote, it may be low because they don't do a good job.  Likewise don't assume expensive means good.  Request references from preferred contractor before starting work.

And do ask plenty of questions. The most important one is how deep will they be excavating the area and how thick a layer of hardcore (MOT1 or crusher runs) is going in. 100-150mm is good, and as long as it is well compacted, will mean the area doesn't end up sinking. 75mm is getting a bit light. If they suggest just bunging in broken up brick and other building waste, use someone else.
The sandstone slabs need to be bedded down on a full bed of mortar, not five dollops - The latter leaves hollow voids which will lead to the slabs cracking. The blocks will be OK laid on to a bed of sharp sand, but the edging needs to be set in a bed of concrete (ideally, 150mm or so thick).

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Thanks for the advice. I've had another quote in that give a few more details of how the quote is broken down.

Lowering the 20m raised area and disposal of waste £1,200

52m of riven sandstone £7650, porcelain £8950 or top quality sandstone £11,500
56m of tegua block paving £5,500

Plus £470 for raised kerb where the paving butts up against the lawn.

So using the riven sandstone it would come to £14,820
