Yes I have just received the tariff it requires a smart meter and I am a low user so I don't know if it's worth it especially in the light of shell selling up.
Where does it say it required it please?  My current tariff ends  on August 31st and I have two offers- fixed tariff where one of the points states:
'We will contact you to install a smart meter where eligible'
    - its not stating its mandatory though isn't it? I mean if I select this option I can agree but don't have to allow them to install the meter?? I absolutely do not want that and managed to dodge it so far.
Anyone knows if its a deal breaker? TY
  • ok - straight from teh horse's mouth- called the SE and asked them out right if this is mandtory and they confirmed they cannot force me to install the SM if I don't want one. Thats why the wording there says 'where eligible'. So changing over to the fixed tariff they will query if I want this done, if I say no, thats the end of it, I continue with new fixed tariff and don't have to worry they will be sending a crew to forcibly install something I don't want in my house. Phew...

Although when the certification period on your dumb meter expires, they will install a smart meter (and can do so without your permission)...

Do you know the certification dates for the meters in your new property? By 2025, my guess is that the Government will make smart meters mandatory as is the case now in France. Governments are fitting smart meters for a reason.

    That's a very optimistic interpretation.

Possibly mixing 2 distinct things --specific supply contract terms and legal mandating of Smart - which AFAIK  hasn't yet happened in UK.

Eligibility is arguably technically suitable - not personal desire.  You may be eligible, and refusal will break those terms.

Many suppliers insist on Smart for all but standard variable rates.  Its in my suppliers  T&Cs for all fixes and on the Web info for their current - have Smart or agree to have fitted.

And they do enforce it and people have been told they will and told not to sign up - as they would back bill as a minimum on refusal when date offered.

And whilst the law hasn't been fully changed yet - it arguably has changed for end of certification - and has fully in some EU nations.

And the Ofgem guidance on end of life - as little as 10 yrs certification - is smart unless in a no signal area.

The wording re customer objection as a reason that used to be there removed years ago.
  • I can’t understand why shell energy prices are high when shell  produce oil & gas so benefit from the sale on the wholesale market, but stick to the maximum they can on the price cap, why not set there tariffs lower

They're not allowed to cross-subsidise because of competition law.

Otherwise they could just price very low, get all the customers and make the other companies go bankrupt, and then put the prices up to wherever they wanted.

A point that is conveniently forgotten by the clickbait "OMG, billions of profit" articles.

If only life was that simple. Shell is an international company and its biggest investor is Black Rock Asset Management which owns c.10% of the shares. Putting to one side Competition Law, all companies will sell to the buyer that offers the highest price. That is how global markets work and it is what investors would expect/demand. For their part, Governments around the World benefit from the taxes on the profits. Not much of that profit is earned in the UK.

The profit margins in the UK energy market are so low that Shell Energy Retail UK is currently up for sale.
