  • This thread is yet another example of why Ofgem needs to mandate that all suppliers are to bill monthly. Monthly bills would get around many of the potential bad debt management issues.

Dozy Ofgem also need to mandate that all suppliers should offer Monthly Variable Direct Debit.  It seems that BG no longer offers MVDD on its new billing system.

I have noticed that BG apply credits a business day before the DD is collected so I appear better off for a while.
Since I was moved to BG and their 6 month billing, I set to and run my own figures monthly to make sure I'm reasonably covered. This month I used their app to lower my DD to a better fit.

British gas have a strange system where they credit your payments to your account, but they only issue a proper bill every 6 months, so your account might show up as being massively in credit, but that may be because they have not debited the usage since the last bill (which could be 5 months or more).  Have you tried asking them to issue a bill at the current date?  You will then find out whether you are really in credit or not.
