Income tax rebate

I've just received a cheque with an income tax rebate for my late mother for the tax year 2022-2023, which is very nice but she died in February 2022 and I had the rebate for 2021-2022 months ago.

My heart sinks at the thought of wasting yet more time on the phone to a government department, so I thought I'd see if anyone has experienced anything similar and, if so, whether I'm safe to just cash the cheque.

If the rebate is indeed due to the estate, under the will I now need to share £3.50 of it between three charities - executorship, the gift that just keeps giving !

  • The previous rebate for was 21-22, this one is for 22-23 and she died towards the end of that tax year so a refund isn't unusual at all. Cash the cheque and distribute it. Did it come with a covering letter explaining the refund? IME that's the norm.

The chances of a) HMRC rerunning their calculations for a deceased person and b) it being wrong, are remote to say the least.

she died Feb 22 which was before the 22-23 started, maybe the estate was earning interest in 22-23?

And that will be eaten up by the legitimate costs of three first class stamps!

The estate received no interest in 22-23, but there was a small amount of residual pension from DWP and the Civil Service which thinking about it would have been subject to tax when she was alive, and I guess HMRC wouldn't have known whether the estate would owe further tax at the point it was paid.

All the "letter" attached to the cheque says is that "The person named above (my mother) is due a repayment of income Tax for the tax year shown" which is 2022-23. At least it's made out to me as I closed the executors' account months ago !

I think the charities will each receive a £5 anonymous donation.

Sorry, my garbled response was to point out that she'd died in 21-22, towards the end of that tax year which left the complete tax year of 22-23 for HMRC to finalise figures, which they now have 4 months after it ended and in line with usual processing times & dates.

I'd be relaxed about it and not waste time chasing it up.
