so I've discovered! trick with the AVC was that there was no internet so not checking on the value of things etc etc - just a few quid going out each month etc etc and the odd annual statement (when they remembered)Doctor_Who said:
~30 years in the stock market tends to do that! However, over 3 years the ride can be quite bumpy.Flugelhorn said:Usual thing, most people I suspect opening S&S ISAs etc don't really understand all this, yes it is all written down for the reading of but I haven't got a clue how a bond or equity works! Really just want everything more simple
I have an old AVC with the company - had it is since mid 90s. Hardly put anything in but now it is worth a great many times any amount I ever put in it, so in mad moment chatting to the FA I opened the S&S ISA

A 'retrospectoscope' is a wonderful device, if only it existed! Knowing what we know now I'm sure we would all have been investing heavily in the 80s and 90s.Flugelhorn said:

With investments it's definitely best to ignore them most of the time but it's very hard to do in these days of instant everything!

3 years ago took out a S&S ISA, only invested the one year though as thought I would see how it did. Well hopeless really the 20K is now 17K.An economic cycle is around 15 years. So, that is the ideal minimum period to be invested. However, 90% of the time you will get away with 5 years being the minimum to see profit.
You have invested for 3 years and in that time, we have had an 18 month negative period which has yet to recover.
Nobody likes negative periods but you were always going to see one sooner or later. In your case, it was sooner.

If you had invested a dozen years ago, you would not be complaining !Flugelhorn said:don't really need the money - maybe better to leave it there a it longer - on the other hand never seem to have picked the right moment for investing in S&S!0 -
I expect you are right - my AVCs (or whatever the pot is called these days) seems to have gone up a lot over that timeAlbermarle said:
