Which is a more secure way of paying by card in person, tapping the card reader or chip and pin?

I believe my card details were cloned very recently and I'm interested in asking for opinions on whether a more secure way of paying by card in person is tapping the card reader or inserting the card and entering the PIN?

Unless you handed your card over to someone who then took it out of your sight, I don’t think your details were obtain via tapping the card reader or inserting it.

Far more likely via a data breach, or phishing email imo.
  • Tapping would be more secure as it eliminates shoulder surfing but neither would result in your card being cloned.

I have heard that the current ways of approval tap or pin will soon be replaced by approval via smart phone

    Define more secure?

Tapping is less secure, hence the £100 limit, but then if something does go wrong there are less questions asked. Accidentally drop your card and dont notice it and someone can go on a bit of a spending spree with tap payments. If someone finds your card and manages to do chip & pin transactions then more questions are asked of you as to how they managed to get both card and pin details.

Contactless payments with the likes of ApplePay are separate consideration.
