someone will hopefully correct me if I am wrong but I think I once heard that once a switch has been set up the original account (in this case Lloyds) don't even see the payment as the switching service transfers the money straight across to the new account without any Lloyds intervention
Thus Natwest had the money - nothing to do with Lloyds. Lloyds won't confirm receipt of the funds as they never received them.
it might be worth asking NatWest what their procedures are for money paid into closed accounts - for example does it bounce back or does it go into a holding account
apologies if I'm wrong1 -

The Current Account Switch Service - all the contact details you might need
You'd hope that the payment would just bounce back to the sender after a few days. Maybe it's just about to resurface.
Edit.

The wifi was down the other night, so the wife and i had to talk to each other. I was surprised to learn she no longer works at Woolworths.
More seriously when transferring large amounts to someone i always send a tenner first and check its arrived to ensure all the details are correct. (i realise in this case you have probably sent your wife money before ...but obviously not for quite some time !)
I know this must be very stressful, but your money is bouncing from pillar to post in a computer system that cant figure out what to do with it. Im sure it will re-surface and find its way back to you in due course. You dont appear to have been scammed which is when i would be worried.
In the mean time you could catch up with what each other have been up to !--look forward to you posting the money has been found.1
