Probably true but it might have detected any risk to humans. My guess would be that the issue here is a gas fire that has never been serviced. A visual and sensor check of the supply connection might have picked up on this issue sooner.QrizB said:Qyburn said:I'm not sure what the point is about the chimney.
A gas alarm would not have detected the leak, unless the alarm was installed in the flue.0 -
I get my gas fire serviced every year, along with my CH boiler. The fire is completely removed, the sealing backplate removed, the cavity checked, smoke bomb sent up the chimney to check the flue & loft checked for any leaks, backplate resealed with ducktape, all connections resealed, fire dusted out & reassembled & tested, along with CO alarm in the room. This year I paid £110 for fire, boiler & a small wall heater & cooker to be checked. Small price for peace of mind & certificate from Gas Safe Registered professional.1

Just catching up with this.
Correct. If one lives next to someone and you feel they might not be coping with Energy Bills etc. Then it is best to check if they are getting on OK. Particularly if they have no family at all. Because if their gas fire blows up, you as a neighbour could also be affected. (Connected chimney?)
This lady did have her gas fire serviced, along with her other gas appliances, right before the huge spike in gas use.
We cannot prove, if that service was actually negligent. Maybe something was dislodged.
I have been reviewing things from my own life experience. A mother who developed dementia at about aged 75. A friend who had early onset dementia at aged 65.
And this lady who has little experience of IT and is struggling at aged 80. She lives 100 miles from me. We met on a holiday.)0
