    Do you have car insurance?

Edit: You also need a fund for basic house maintenance.

Do check the rates on those overdrafts, they are often effectively around 40% APR.

And think strategically. From the point of view of your banks using an overdraft is often great for their profit, but marks you as risky. So clear them.

Your smaller credit card may have a limit higher than £200, so that spare capacity will be taken into account be future lenders. One or two cards like Barclays are known to offer 0% deals to existing lenders, so it's worth keeping a card, but reducing the limit. Which is why you've been asked which creditors you have.

Once you got them sorted, build in some emergency savings each month, say £50, budget properly for holidays, stuff like Christmas and car maintenance (how much does the MOT, a set of tyres and oil change cost). So you have an emergency fund (for when the cooker packs up), and a budgeting fund that covers annual costs, spreading the load over 12 months.

Then set the payments for the 0% cards slightly above the minimum each month, to avoid being seen as a persistent debtor.

    And hammer the 22% card.

It may be worth just looking around at the kid's toys, stuff you no longer use etc and selling what you can just to get a little extra boost into your emergency fund.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

I think you need to carefully go over your SOA again, checking through your last few months statements to make sure the figures are accurate. For instance - you have a car but no insurance - if that is correct then that's a worry.

Depending on the age of the kids - £500 pm on groceries may be able to be reduced? As you have no savings I'd maybe look to build up a small pot for emergencies.
My mum pays my insurance annually for my birthday - very depressing but helpful! 🙈

Ok, so if your SOA is accurate, you've got a healthy £650 to throw at your debt on top of the minimum payments. While it makes the most sense financially to focus on the debt with the highest interest, I think I might be tempted to pay off your overdrafts and small credit card debt first and close them down as you'll half the number of debts quickly by doing this. What credit card is the smallest credit card debt, others may be able to advise that keeping it open may lead to a 0% offer.

Having said the above, do you know how you got into debt? The reason I ask is that your SOA shows a healthy surplus - if the debt is from general living, then the SOA isn't accurate because you are spending more than you think.
So, pay off overdrafts and smaller card ASAP then keep the £4000 0% card going and chuck whatever we can at the higher interest rate card?

I don’t know to be totally honest - I think it’s been SMP x 2 children over the last 5 years (no pay at all for 2 months last year) then a steady build without realising - holidays we couldn’t actually afford if we had stopped and thought, but didn’t and it has spiralled. We have had a very much ‘life is too short’ mentality and now it’s come back to bite us massively.

We have only really realised now as remortgage is due so we’ve taken stock. Dread to think where we’d be in two years if we hadn’t been forced to reassess.

The magnitude of it now has me in such a panic. Can’t sleep or eat.
Yes. RAS has added detail to the plan, so their post is your guide.

What bank is your smallest credit card debt with?

As you are not sure how the debt has built up, you'll have to keep an eye on your budget regardless, but you now need to keep a track of your expenses to make sure your SOA is accurate. Every spend needs to be recorded against it's category.

I don't want to diminish your feelings, but this is really not as bad as you think it is. We get people on here with debt above £50,000 and no money spare in their SOA to even pay the minimums. You have a healthy surplus to pay down these debts and you even have room in your budget to cut back more if you want to pay off the debts.

If your mortgage payments go up, we can help you reassess and come up with a new plan, but it feels like it will be a similar situation of just steadily overpaying the debts until they are gone.

Smallest card is with my main bank (first direct)

Frittering, SMP / no pay, then reducing working days but still living like salary the same, and not keeping on top of it.

Thank you, deep breaths - felt like an unclimbable mountain but in perspective we can do this.

Honestly these responses and being able to write everything down here has already done wonders for my mental health - I’ve had a week of very very low moments but feeling a little more positive.

Is it sensible (ie look at the numbers) to do a balance transfer from your 22% to your first direct credit card?

Frittering is easily done, but you've caught it in time.

You may find it helpful to start a diary in the diary thread of this board. I'd suggest you do a weekly review of your spend against your budget and a progress update of how your debt is reducing and savings pots are increasing. Also a little comment about how you are feeling. It's anonymous like this board and I think you'll find the encouragement and camaraderie will help keep you both on track and feeling positive when it feels like a tough climb.

It may not be much comfort, but in the great scheme of things, you've only made the same mistakes as hundreds of thousands of other people, with the added complications of older people 'living like they did', after transferring to pensions.

The difference is that you've woken up and smelt the roses before SHTF. You could discuss together alternating a frugal month with a normal one (minus frittering)?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Definitely look up the APR for each of your cards/loans/overdrafts. Some of those could be higher than you think - that loan for example won't be at 0% unless it's from a family member? Once you have all the APRs and expiry dates of any that are promotional rates, you'll basically have a picture of which order you should tackle them.

I am not sure if you really do have £655 left over each month but it may be worth checking those figures.  Also dig out the interest rates but if I were you I would focus on the overdrafts first and the smaller card. You will then just be left with the loan and two cards.

The groceries look a little high and I would start putting some away into emergency savings but you can deal with this with some financial discipline. You have not put anything into the holidays category but obviously  you do have them as you have said they are part of the reason for the debt.  If you are going to do holidays then start up a savings pot and save for them.

    Thank you!

I’ll recheck all the figures - I think we I have downplayed ‘entertainment’ because we won’t be doing that anymore, far too much previously without a second thought, but totally unnecessary. I have said no to a couple of things this week now and really woken up - taking that as a bit of progress 🙏🏼

We have had holidays, but again I’ve now said no more for the next couple of years - we can go when we have savings instead of debt.
