I presume they will have to use an estimate based on prior year usage to generate your use and cost for that period on the old faulty Smart Meter.
    Do others agree?
If smart meters were half as good as they're cracked up to be then it should still be possible to extract the usage data from the optical port.
If the problem is that the battery in the meter has gone flat, there won't be any recent logged data to extract!
You could run a gas meter from a fuel cell rather than a battery, but I suspect the cost & safety implications make that a non-starter.
I have often wondered why some sort of piezoelectric device could not be fitted to gas meters.
First generation battery gas meters were pretty unreliable, mine was replaced with a traditional meter after a very short life back in 2006, and things don't seem to have changed much

Being of a cynical nature - my suspicion is that they don't want to fit a replacement smart meter because it won't count against their Government imposed fitting targets. One of the weaknesses of the whole programme is that targets were set on installation of meters not of installing working meters !!

I arrived here because I am trying to search what on earth is happening with British Gas Smart Meters. Neither of mine have worked since May 23 and despite numerous online chats and reassurance they will soon be fixed, they still dont work. I am having to take manual readings which due to the location of the meters is not the easiest of tasks. Seems crazy that BG cannot fix this. I am also tempted to mention the wonderful British Gas App but thats been faulty for well over a year so seems pointless even talking about it!!

Vote with your feet and switch to a friendlier company such as Octopus.  Their app is also excellent.

And if you do that, check whether your destination supplier has a referral code scheme - Octopus do, £50 each.  Eon as well.  Not sure about any others.
