I’m thinking of taking a trip to Berlin. I have never been before and do not know anyone who has been to Berlin.

Surprised to see that Premier Inn is in Berlin and as I am familiar and they are in my price range I’m thinking of staying at a Premier Inn near the city centre.

Is it easy to get from the airport to the city centre? I’m presuming a taxi is the best option?

Id like to use the hop on/off sight seeing buses. Anyone been on these?

Any advice would be appreciated 🙂

*also as have coeliac condition I need to eat gluten free. It ok to take biscuits, bread etc in hand luggage to Germany?

Thanks

The train from the airport works well, you should also book for the Reichstag Dome well in advance...

Personally I don't use hop on - hop off bus tours, but I've done one of the 'free' walking tours (you are expected to tip the guide though)

If you're looking for a great restaurant (although, this isn't an MSE tip), I really recommend Kink. https://kink-berlin.de/

We went to Berlin a few years ago, the public transport is excellent and the most punctual I've experienced.

We went expecting to be paying to get into tourist attractions, but the city is a living museum, we only paid for the zoo, we also visited Sachenhausen, which was fairly easy via train.

There's plenty to do, though Hitler's bunker wasn't quite what I was expecting.

    I'd definitely revisit.

Berlin is surprisingly cheap and as above the whole city is like a museum. Check the tripadvisor forum for loads of good info/advice.

No - on a recent work trip into France, my colleague had his homemade ham and cheese sandwiches confiscated...

Berlin is one of my favourite cities. Lots of history (good and bad), excellent public transport and surprisingly affordable for a capital city.

I would definitely recommend a walking tour to learn some history and get your bearings as it's a huge place.

Only tip I would give is if buying a carnet type multi day public transport ticket make sure you go before the end of the year or buy once you actually get there.

I postponed a trip due to covid and couldn't either cancel the carnet or get a refund -not a cent as it rolled over past the year end, I lost over e40, not happy.

Because now it is a block of flats / carpark? Only a plaque showing the approximate spot I believe.
