Octopus Smart Meter Installation Today

Options
Awaited this installation today with a fair amount of nervous trepidation, more than anything else due to a nagging worry that it might cause a problem for the solar panel inverter when the array was isolated (purely my own ignorance about such things and the FIT is certainly a nice little earner).

The installation is now complete and I thought I might just post a few words on this forum for others who may possibly find my experience of some interest.

I will admit that from the off I have been one of the many naysayers about the wisdom or otherwise of having smart meters installed, particularly after reading many of the very negative experiences which are published from time to time in the media and indeed on this website. Also, I was never fully comfortable with my previous supplier EDF where I found customer service and billing arrangements not really to my liking which was a pity because in the past I have found the company to operate with very high standards from a customer perspective.

So moving to Octopus last month very quickly restored my confidence in a company which interacts very well with customers and promptly had my online account open and accessible. This spurred me on to book an installation for both gas and electric meters all done online.

Lady gas engineer turned up shortly after lunch and within a 90 minute time frame had installed and commissioned both new meters as well as giving me a run through on the IHD. Not only was she very efficient, but also very helpful in explaining the meter functions/menus etc and ensured that everything was working (gas boiler/solar panel meter) before she left. An absolute credit to Octopus and SMS the contractor for whom she worked.

I have just checked online and details of the new meters already appear in my account.

Okay so it's very early days, but I have to say in this modern day and age when customer service standards seem to have dropped in so many areas of the economy, this was a tremendous advert for Octopus and I can only hope that their tariffs continue to be reasonably competitive so I never have to be tempted to jump ship.

People like myself have been promoting SMETS2 meters to other for the past 4 1/2 years!  You now need to make best use of your new meters by selecting a tariff that can offer you savings like Agile or Tracker.
  • I also had smart meters fitted (yesterday) by Octopus. Also an isolator switch f.o.c.
The electric meter and data  has started to populate in the app already. Final elec reading for old meter received and balance updated. Nothing yet for gas. IHD up and running for gas and elec.

Wait for the ‘ESME and GSME commissioned messages’ on the IHD. There are a myriad of industry procedures that take place behind the scenes to set up a new smart meter account.

You’re lucky with your smart meter experience. I’ve had smart meters for some years, now with Octopus. My gas meter failed in February and just shut down with no notice leaving me without gas.  Octopus replaced the meter but ever since I’ve had no bills and no smart gas meter data. Their customer service is awful and not in t(e least bit helpful. Now they are saying it can’t be done yet previously it worked fine for years
