My Barclays SAR data goes back 25 years!

I issued a subject access request on Barclays who I had banked with a long time back and also had Barclaycards which I defaulted on some years back. I was interested to see what they retained on me. I was amazed to find all of my details including bank and CC statements going back to 1998! I couldn't care less really but I am surprised that they retain that under GDPR as it would be difficult to justify. Anyway there we go! At least 25 years of data is retained

Under GDPR, it's easy enough to justify. I personally wouldn't set the retention period that far back purely due to storage, but there's no issue with it.2

I'm not sure that would be unusual, with some of the older traditional banks. Within the last two years I submitted a SAR to Clydesdale Bank. I left them in 2018 after being dissatisfied with how they handled a complaint.
I received about a ream of paper, dating back to 1996.0
