When I read this again I was realising why I have a lawn.
4 baby blackbirds were frreing along with a dunock. The parents are here gleaning worms to feed the young in the nest.
I guess i can put up with it as less than perfect and the mowing if I'm helping and it's always a joy to watch.

I made the garden from scratch but I haven't had one friend round that cares if it's perfect. They want tea/coffee and cake and me to welcome them. If it's welcoming wildlife too that's a double whammy  :)

Oh and i have had perfect lawns on occasion. No one noticed and no one cared. Never watered.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Most of us live in a urban environment but nice to hear that in little oasis of tranquillity that paddocks are thriving.
I wouldn't elevate our areas of grass to paddocks, but they share some similarities, like the clover sheramber mentions, plus the daisies, self-heal, and a few others that do much to disguise the state of the grass. Because they're next to fields, there's always incursions from dandelion and plantain, and I use a pro product on them about twice a year, but that's the limit of the 'lawn care.'
A very quick and unscientific survey of posh houses in 'Country Life'  revealed no very smart lawns either, until I'd got to property 10, which turned out to be an advert for a builder. :D
One benefit of being a 'conspiracy theorist' is having slug pellets that work.

My grass patch has just been mown for the first time since April, and is generally the roaming ground of 3 local woodpigeons & numerous sparrows.
