Pet Insurance Increase

My dog insurance renewal arrived this weekend.  Increase over £100 for the year.  Spoke direct to them to see if they could do anything and got a flat 'no'.  Told because of increasing costs and pets age -she is 2 and I have never made a claim. Four hours of comparisons found comparable cover, smaller excess, £60, for £209 a year less.
Well worth the searching and now paying less.

That is only viable with no claims history and nothing you have so much as spoken to a Vet about.

I agree the pets age is a ridiculous reason, but £100 per year is £8 per month extra which isn't that bad.
I understand insurance costs have risen across the whole industry over the last few years.

Down the line many a pet owner has come to regret getting cheap pet insurance and had claims refused or only gotten part of the cost back.

The policy you found may also contain an introductory discount and will go up come renewal.

    We’ve just had an £11k.
    no bill share thankfully.
i would not recommend skimping on cover (not saying you have).
when you come claim is when you find out whether you got it right.

    Totally agree.
Our annual cost was £165. Now I know why some are nearly that a month.

One of our dogs developed a eye ulcer. 1st treatment of drops did not work well, so had to change to stronger ones, which still did not work. Then had to have some blood taken & work done on the blood to use as drops. At this point it was drops ever 4 hours.
We were warned at that point that she might be referred to specialist hospital, as danger of losing eye (Extra £3K cost if you did) She ended up stopping at vets overnight with drops every hour & that worked.
In all up to that point it was £1200. Muppet features (me) only looked at annual cost, not actual cover (never again) & as it is annual cover & not lifetime, we can no longer claim for this problem.
Cover we had is only £1K with £99 excess. (ouch)
Still nearly another £1K in visits & drops after getting her home.

All good now, but as above. A shock to make sure that you realise how much some of these simple things can cost.

End of the day as a 6 year old dog, the cost of this is probably less than we might have paid in insurance. But it could have been a lot worse. So renewal is going to require some time to find a balance between what might be needed & what we can afford.

How was it caused. She was sniffing in a bush, which we have since found out has a holly bush inside you can not see. So she poked her eye on a holly leaf.
    Life in the slow lane

I've also posted many times before about a £3k bill I had for my late cat, which was purely diagnostic. Thankfully fully covered by insurance apart from excess and co-pay due to her age, which I was aware of in advance and had savings for.

Cheap insurance is cheap for a reason.

Insurance companies are in business to make a profit for thier share holders. They are not NHS for pets.
