Turn off "Trending" on chrome

How do you permanantly turn TRENDING off on chrome on Android ?
It keeps on coming back on Android 12

    1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a browser like Chrome. or Firefox.
    2. Go to google.com.
    3. At the top left, tap Menu. Settings.
    4. Under "Autocomplete with trending searches," select Do not show popular searches.

    Yes - but when this is done - and the phone is rebooted - "trending searches" reappears
    ie) Its not permanent
