V5 registration question after part exchange

I bought a new car from a dealer with part exchange of my own car, but I didn't have the V5 form with me. So I have posted it to them, and I also filled in online at http://gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle to inform the DVLA that I have sold the car and no longer own it.

But apparently the address was wrong - after I moved house I updated the address on my driver's licence immediately, but I didn't even think of the car registration, and to be honest, I thought since it was all DVLA that they should know what my address is.

After I submitted the form to tell them I'd sold my vehicle, they said they had sent the confirmation to my old address (so I won't receive it). I then tried to update the address online, and it said I'm not allowed, it can be updated by post only, using the form which I had already posted to the car dealer. And it also said there is a £1000 fine if you haven't told them your current address after moving.

So how badly have I messed up, does any of this matter? I'm thinking the person I sold my house to will receive the confirmation and probably bin it, and the dealer will use the V5 form I sent to transfer ownership to someone else, and if the DVLA were not aware my address was wrong then they will still not know and nothing will happen.

They will hunt you down with a death squad of ninjas.

    Ok, they won't :)
You have nothing to worry about, as like you said dealer will get V5C and current owner will bin the letter.

Provided that you weren't caught by a speed camera, red light camera etc.
If you were then the paperwork would have gone to the address the car was registered to, you wouldn't have received it and you would eventually have been convicted of failure to provide driver details.

Just check your driving licence online and see if it has more points than you expect.

As regards the car sale, nothing to worry about it will all sort itself out now.

It only has to be an address that you can be contacted at, so a relative/friend/mail drop is fine.

The OP says they won't receive mail from their old address though, so they could have not received a speeding ticket......

I'm pretty sure speeding tickets would go to the address on my driver's licence, wouldn't they? To be honest, I don't understand why the actual registration of the car ownership has a different address to the licence when they're both DVLA.

Unfortunately, I've realised any rebate on the road tax will be sent to my old address... It's not gonna be much though considering the tax on my old car was £20 a year and I renewed in December, we're talking less than a £10 cheque if they send one.

Edit: on second thoughts, speeding tickets will probably go to the address the car is registered at. I had redirection in place for a year though, so there's only about a three week period that one could have arrived.

Unless you're stopped at the time, the police have no idea who was driving the speeding car. To find out, they have to ask the registered keeper.

The DVLA know that a car is registered to John Smith (say), but they have  thousands of John Smiths with driving licences, and have no way of identifying the right one. So there is no connection between your DL and V5C, and that's why you have to notify a change of address on each of them separately.
