Swallows making a huge mess
Options
Swallows decided to nest in my back porch this year. I can’t think why because it seems like a dreadful location for raising a family. Both me and the cat are in and out of the back door regularly throughout the day, which makes the swallows start dive-bombing us. The nest isn’t very high up either. I use the porch for storing coats, boots etc and their poop has already stained and destroyed some of them. I started covering things up with bin liners as best I could but the mess is still unbelievable. Flies are now swarming around it constantly. I’m not sure what type but they’re not regular house flies. Every time I open my door, it’s a swirl of dust and flies, which ends up in my kitchen.
It would be easy to prevent them returning to this site next year as I could cover up the small gap that they are using for entry. However, I’m worried they will have nowhere else to live. I know swallows like to return to the same place every year. Is there something I could build (cheaply!) for them to nest in nearby? I don’t know if they would use a normal nest box. I’m not sure what to do but it’s becoming very unhygienic.

Give the area under the nest a good clean and sterilise then just keep newspaper underneath till birds move back to sunnier climes.
Bit jealous of you ,we do not see as many swallows around here now, and find them very entertaining to see.
I think you can get nest boxes suitable for swallows that you could put up somewhere suitable before next spring1 -
This happened to the toilets in a national park rural location. Lovely for the visitors, not so lovely for the staff.
I can't bring up anything online but if you scroll right down to the general enquiries at the bottom of the list thet will forward your question to the right department.

We have a local charity which will install nest boxes for us for a small fee - they're a charity. Do you have anything like that locally??0
