I started checking my bills in detail today as I owed soo much money.

It was super simply maths.
I was in Debt of 214.03
I paid them £1424
They "refund" (their word used on the bill) £266 (£66+£66+£67+£67)
I used £1467.24 worth of energy.

My debt is now £523.24

I did though get paid £266 into my bank account.

I hope I got my maths right. My closing balance should -£257.27

Edited the title.   Added DIDN'T

No they didn't.  They are right, you are wrong.

"I used £1467.24 worth of energy." - there's your mistake.  Check the subtotals, where that number is actually calculated, and you'll find that they included the government discount there.

Please help me out, what are your calculations to get a debt of £523.24

    I've told you where.

Get the bills.  Look at the page where the subtotals are calculated (usually the second page).  Add up the charges, and they will come to £266 more than the £1467.24 that was used on the front page.

That's where EdF applied the discount that you say they stole.  Stupid, and many other people have had the same issue as you, but that's what they did.

edit:  Post those sections of the bill here if it's still unclear and we'll point it out.
  • So look at the image.   I left the first line in as that explains the warm home discount.  Take a note of the VAT charged. All my credit + usage is charged at 5%.

    OK, looking at this stepwise:
    1. Your energy use is E £436.61 plus G £1356.92 (before VAT) = £1793.53.
    2. VAT on that is £89.68 for a total charge of £1883.21
    3. They have credited you with £408.86 + £7.41 (ie. £416) for WHD and EBSS payments.
    4. This leaves a charge of £1467.21.
    5. You paid them £1424, but had £266 refunded to your bank account - so your net payment to them was £1158.
    6. For this bill, your payments leave you short by £309.21.
    7. If you were already in debt by £214.03, that means your account balance is now -£523.24

The answer is there in what you have posted. Your usage is actually £1,793.53, but with the EBSS payments and WHD that brings the total you owed before payments to £1,467.21.

Why the immediate jump to "they stole it" rather than attempting to understand the bill?

Additional 10p added to the original debt.

  • Ah maybe they didn't steal.   It is just so complicated their bill.   I got it soo badly wrong.

Matt matt and Matt.   It was on the 3rd page and I missed it on the 2nd page some of the subtotal.

Thanks guys.  I would have made a fool of myself complaining.

Like we said, it's a mad way to calculate it - probably because nobody set up their bills expecting the government to randomly dish out cash.

You're not the first to come here with this question and you might not be the last.
