Just to finish this post off, for anyone interested, like me now. 

Here are some meter readings just before the leak was stopped and just after. 

Before leak stopped: gas lever not yet turned off. Lady using no appliances or Boiler: maybe just a boiler pilot light 

4988.115  at   7pm on June 28, 2023
4992.760  at  09.15 am June 29th, 2023


After lever at meter switched off 

4993.752   Midday on June 29th, 2023

Gas Leak fixed on July 1st in the morning

4994.148  Today July 3rd at 9am.  (She has used gas cooker ring a couple of times.)

I have just received the receipt from when the Cadent Engineer switched off the gas supply, due to the gas fire leak. (For my friend.)

Can I ask, do you know how long it was between your friend's previous routine gas inspection, and when the leak started?

(I don't know about annual gas inspections at all, what they actually check as we've never had gas.)
