It started out as most scams being believable right up until the second phone call asking for pass port and bank details. See below.

Even the first call wasn't believable as no one genuine is ever going to call you offering to buy your shares.

What crazy price were you offered? It looks Iberdrola currently trades for €11.84. (Of course you'd never have received anything.)

When you get unsolicited, phone call, email, text or social media claims, just think SCAM

  • In the last week I also have received a number of phone calls from Transworld Advisors LLC regarding buying some shares at a very preferential price due to a hostile takeover of IAG.  They wanted over £5,000 in insurance which I would have to pay up front.  If it is too good to be true then extremely likely that a scam.  They were very clever!
  • P.s I have reported Transworld Advisors LLC to Federal Trade commission.

Indeed just had the one from Visa saying £900 has been debited from my account. Had that about 3 times in the last week now.

I'm of the same opinion, even when (as recently) I knew exactly what they were probably phoning about.

I do try and say - look its not you, its just that people have to be super careful these days - but I wonder sometimes how these non-UK call centre people feel. Hopefully the bank employing them has made it clear that it's what people are supposed to do.

Many scam companies purport to reside in the US or UK, but are just using virtual facilities to mask operations elsewhere.

I would like to see genuine companies provide a freephone number and state clearly that if they ever call it will be to ask for a callback and that they'll never ask for personal information when they initiate the call.

We were contacted by phone from the US with an offer to buy Iberdrola shares. It all seemed very genuine. There was a website meridiangrpllc.com, supposedly a law firm, and we were sent a non-disclosure agreement to sign because the take-over was to be kept quiet.  Calls had a number registered and it was a US number.  We became more suspicious when they were phoning every evening to chase us and I couldn't find any other info on this company or its employees, except the website.  I only really found out for sure by searching online looking on mse forum and seeing similar stories.  Reported to NCSC (gov cyber security) so please do the same for scams.
