card payment made from account with bank A but purchase failed and retailer says no money claimed.
Payment was made through Klarma - is this 'middle man'? .
Klarma confirm payment has not been claimed. So the money is sitting within Klarma who say they cannot return money until retailer confirms purchase cancelled or payment failed.

How did you know the payment failed?
retailer have confirmed they wont take it.
Is that not proof that the payment failed and confirmation that the retailer will not claim the payment from Klarma?
