It's a bit of jingoistic flag waving from the government, who decided that all the problems in Northern Ireland could be solved by changing the sticker from "GB" to "UK".

That was the cover story when it was changed at three months' notice, with no government publicity in autumn 2021. The change was only originally publicised by the UN.

A cynic may think that he more likely real reason is that it meant all the blue EU/GB strips were no longer valid.
