MP1995, thank you for your comment I believe you are confirming what I an others have observered that Octopus has a bug in its billing system that is randomly knocking out variable Direct Debits. If ive signed up to a major energy company to pay my bills by direct debit I dont think I should have to manually make the payments because their system is not up to the job! What if it decides to randomly reinstate the direct debit after ive made a manual payment?

I had the misfortune to be with Edf before Octopus and their bills, statements and amount outstanding system only made sense to their billing computer.

You are lucky that you have both the time and the education that household financial management is "simple". Sadly personal financial management skills have only recently been taught in schools and in the past you were just expected to pick it up as you went along. There are many people who dont do well at maths. There are also many reasons as to why someone might "take their eye off the ball" and not deserve to be done over by the incompetence of an energy company. Including but not limited to mental health problems, mayor illness such as cancer, old age and dementia. Ive been dealing with energy companies for a long time and the number of their errors ive had to resolve is truly shocking.
