Getting a meter reigstered
Hi guys..
I've seen a couple of other threads which is asking same question on getting an existing electricity meter registered , but each scenario seems to be slightly different.
The history to this (as far as I can tell) is that the property that i recently bought has a meter that was never registered correctly after it went through a redevelopment a few years back. My property is part of a number of residences that were all converted and I get the feeling that the meter is probably on the system showing as Plot 1, Plot 2 etc...something like that. It's definitely not showing against my address because when i spoke to my local electricity company on a separate matter a little while back they asked for my address...they couldn't find it.
So...actually this is a two part question.
1. How do i go about getting it registered correctly
2. I think my conscience is catching up with me....so, yes I have been getting electricity free for a little while now, but nowhere near as long as the previous owner!!!! What would be the impact of this? Would there be a huge bill for electricity that I am suddenly liable for...even though I have only recently bought?
thnx

Provided that there is no evidence of fraud, you can approach any supplier and ask them to register your meter as a 'shipper less' supply. You would only be liable for charges from the date that the meter is registered on the National Database.
That said, when you give the meter serial number to a supplier, it will see very quickly if there has been a mis-registration. All they need to do is change the linked MPAN listing to your postal address. In such circumstances, you would be liable for all charges from the date that you became responsible for the property. Backbilling would not apply.0 -
hi..thanks for that.
so..when you say... 'you would be liable for all charges from the date that you became responsible for the property.'...doe that mean from the day I purchased the property? Is everything prior to that point written off.? Just wondering how it would all be calculated...

is there a way to determine whether it's the meter or the property that's not registered? Based on my conversation with the supply company, i'd say that the property is definitely not registered...but as we were discussing a separate matter at the time, we never discussed the meter in my property.
Is there a way of finding out whether the meter is registered somewhere (different address, plot etc)..? I suppose i could ask the energy supplier, but at this very moment in time I'm reluctant to raise alarm bells. I'd rather do that once i have all the facts in place.0 -
Each property has a MPAN; the meter serial number is linked to the MPAN. When the database is checked using the meter serial number it will reveal whether there is an MPAN. If there is a MPAN it will have an address against it. All the supplier need to do is change the address listed against the MPAN to the correct postal address.
If the supplier is ‘shipperless’ then there will not be a MPAN. The supplier will have to do a full registration.
Talk meter serial numbers not property addresses in the first instant.
Misregistrations are common. I live in No 14 which was Plot 6. My meter was registered as if it was linked to No 6: that is, the word Plot was left off the database listing. My supplier found the MPAN/ meter serial link and changed the address on the database.0 -
ah...ok. I'll start there then,,,with the meter number. I wonder if there really is an MPAN for my address...i see when you go onto one of these sites that search for MPAN, it lists each of my neighbours, but not me. 36 is there, 37 (me) isn't, 38 is etc.
Also...me being nosey, I have a feeling that there could well be 2 other properties on the development that are in the same situation...as they are missing as well. Saying that...as we are all on a development, i can't see a Plot 1,2,3 etc listed in there....all listings are present and correct i.e valid address.
It will be interesting to see what has happened. I'll leave the other 2 neighbours alone :-)
