on May 27 I cancelled a flight with BA and received in writing, a refund of £4190.    on jun 5 I received £502.     since then I have called 5 times and have been told it is being escalated with the refunds team and someone would call me back

NO ONE EVER CALLS

I am being charged £100's of interest on my credit card

I have written and complained .... NO ANSWER

as I write this I am on the phone to BA on a Sunday evening chasing the balance of payment and being told they are speaking to the refunds department ... who have said it is  pending ....

WHAT ARE MY LEGAL OPTIONS as I am getting no where with them

Assuming you were definitely entitled to the full refund (i.e. that the written offer wasn't a mistake) then you could pursue them via small claims, but that's unlikely to be appropriate after less than a month.  A chargeback claim via your card provider might be viable, on the basis of refund not received.

I don't understand the bit about incurring "£100's of interest on my credit card" - surely if you'd travelled as originally booked then you'd have paid out for the flights some time ago (or expected significant interest)?

They were presumably happy to incur the interest for the enjoyment of a holiday but arent happy to incur it for a holiday cancelled by the operator (guessing they did given they've agreed a refund).

We had problems with BA and refunds a while back... their complaints team kept saying it will be refunded but their refunds team kept rejecting the request. Ultimately got it sorted by escalating to their Executive complaints team who did follow it through until the refund was made (though they too had the issue that the refund team initially pushed back on the request)

Yes, I can entirely see why OP is unhappy, but just don't see there being any merit in trying to make anything out of card interest costs - it does seem unusual circumstances that someone spending thousands on fully flexible fares would be encountering cashflow issues from a delayed refund to what's presumably a sub-prime card!

Possibly the money that was to be used to pay the credit card bill had to be utilised to pay for alternative tickets?

Call your bank, explain the situation and ask them to dispute the transaction.  That should at least stop interest accruing whilst they look into it.  You'll probably have to provide the bank with proof of BA's full refund offer to assist their investigation.
  • The BA Refunds team has also let me down over many months, promising to pay but not paying.  It’s rather a long story with BA cancelling 4 return flights to Jersey in April 2020. My credit card account no longer exists and BA sent me to the bank for a refund transaction number but I can’t get that.  They promised to refund me in June 2023, and promised me again in July, but the refund has not appeared in my account. I’ve raised a complaint but have heard nothing back. My husband has since died so it’s all been rather distressing.

What’s the next step? Is there an ombudsman?  I would appreciate any advice.
