Travel Insurance Cancellation Claim

Looking for some advice please.
We have a £7k package booked with TUI and park tickets booked separately for a trip on 13th July.
My wife’s father has been living with cancer for the last 6 years but has went down hill fast in the last couple of weeks. He is now in hospital with multiple organ failure.
He could stabilise and get home or may not make it out of hospital we just don’t know.
My wife is panicking about the holiday because as it stands we don’t think we can go on 13th July.
We have insurance that adequately covers the amount we have paid.
The claim needs to be made 48hrs before departure. It also says we need a medical certificate.
Has anyone been in this situation or can advise the best way to do this.
Should I contact TUI or Insurance first?

Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

Please read the policy carefully, serious health conditions of close relatives are often required to be declared to the insurer when the policy is taken out.
A previous cancer diagnosis may well be excluded.

There is nothing at all in the policy documents that mention declaring medical conditions of close relatives.Ayr_Rage said:Please read the policy carefully, serious health conditions of close relatives are often required to be declared to the insurer when the policy is taken out.

Thats because almost no insurer gives you the facility to do so (I actually know of none that do but there always could be one somewhere).marco_79 said:

The wording of the TUI policy, if you were to buy it today, has exclusions that could apply:
Any medical condition affecting you, a close relative or a close business associate that you are aware of, that could reasonably be expected to result in a claim on this policy.
Circumstances known to you before you purchase your policy or at the time of booking any trip which could reasonably have been expected to lead to cancellation or cutting short of the trip
Pre-existing medical conditions as described in the Pre-existing medical condition section (unless you have contacted us and we have accepted in writing)
With this policy however it may be that not all is lost... the final one is badly worded as "pre-existing condition" is explicitly described as something impacting someone travelling and covered by the policy and so shouldnt apply. Therefore it comes down to if you could have "reasonably expected" his condition to worsen... this will very much therefore come down to what his doctor says and if he concurs that it was a rapid decline post you buying the insurance or if its always been inevitable and increasingly likely as time went on.0
