lounge ceiling half caved in

You may well find a plasterer can do a repair for less than your excess.By the time you've paid for a report (probably a structural surveyor, although the insurance company would be able to tell you what level of qualifications is acceptable), it could get expensive. The premiums will probably go up and stay high for the next few years so that they can claw back the cost.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1 -
My concern is not only should that ceiling have never fallen down like that but what are the state of your other ceilings like? Are likely to collaspe with very little notice?
There has also been some additional timber fitted in your ceiling at some point , I wonder if the ceiling was removed to gain access then the original plasterboard was reinstated this would weaken it and vibrations finished it off
Have you checked the other panels? (Press them upwards with your hand you should have no movement)
I take it you are still using the lounge? 8 by 4 12.5mm weighs 25kg 9.5mm weighs 20kg, 6 by 3 12.5mm weighs 20kg 9.5mm weighs 15kg , I wouldn't want any of that dropping on me head (luckily you were out!)1 -
no I am not using the lounge I have moved to the downstairs bedroom. The house was bult as a bugalow then had a loft conversion in the 80's by a previous owner, that explains the extra wood, half the ceiling is normal loft and the other half has a bedroom over it.

Is the path concrete or tarmac?barnaclebill said:Just a thought, the crack started when they were using jack hammers on the path around my corner plot laying high speed fibre, i could feel the vibration in the floor, would that make the claim for accidental damage?

Remember that now you have informed your insurers you will need to declare the incident for the next 5 years when you get quotes each year even if you decide not to proceed with the claim or they decline it.barnaclebill said:Update, called the insurance company, didnt get a no but they want a report as to why the ceiling fell down, dont think the plasterers who are coming to give me quotes can do that so I think it needs a surveyor but what kind, a basic house surveyor?1 -
I don't understand why you'd need to declare something like this, just on the basis of seeking advice regarding a potential claim?DullGreyGuy said:

Technically you do, although I bet most people don't if they don't go ahead with the claim.benson1980 said:

To get a quote you are normally asked to simply declare claims or losses are you not. I’m still not following why anyone would have to declare it?mi-key said:

Are you sure that's the question?benson1980 said:

For car insurance, for example, they often ask about any accidents or claims, and accidents where you didn't claim are included in this.0 -
Don’t know. That’s why I’m asking as I thought it would be useful to clarify- not least as I’ve contacted my insurance company a couple of times asking for advice but not progressed to claim.CSI_Yorkshire said:

I guess you could get properly into the weeds with car insurance and what would constitute an accident, and declare loads of stuff. Never really given it much thought…until now.0
