Saving on recarpetting

Got a few rooms that'll need recarpetting. Any general advice on how to get any decent deals. Would your big box retailers be the best starting point, Carpet Right etc. Or, local shops that are independent. What about eBay and organising the fitting separately?

For smaller rooms you can often get end of roll bargains. Most local independents will have various bits available, and ebay can also be good for getting them. My local place advertises them on facebook marketplace as well.

The national retailers give you a good headline price on the carpet and then mark up the underlay, grippers, door strips, etc and charge you 50 quid for the fitters to pick the roll of carpet up from the shop on their way to you...

You can get the accessories on eBay or independent sites at a good price.

General advice is buy the best underlay you can afford, wen we were carpeting a few years are Cloud 9 seemed to be recommended, not sure if there are better recommendations these days.

Personally I'd prefer to go to a store to see the actual carpet.

When I was pricing up before moving last year I found the underlays were significantly cheaper online than the national sheds (e.g I could have done four rooms to the price of one).

Underlay and grippers are very easy to fit yourself and we got a cheap deal for the fitters from an independent for the final carpet fit (the stretching is the skilled bit!).

We've always used local suppliers and often get deals with offcuts for smaller rooms. They usually can arrange a fitter, and we pay him an agreed amount on the installation day.

If you're confident with DIY then fitting a carpet is not difficult and a knee kicker not that expensive , b and q do one for twenty quid, also need a steel bolster for 12 quid to tuck the carpet down behind the grippers, all other tools you already should have

Or just pay a man £50 to do the job, better than the average homeowner could do, and probably for less than buying a selection of tools and fixings that you have no experience using and will probably never need again.  :)

  • I bought some but from designer carpets online and got a local fitter to fit.3 beds, hallway and stairs cost around £1500 with cloud 8 underlay and westex carpets. Probably saved 2/3 of the price from the big carpets shops

I always get an independent carpet fitter who will do a room for about £50 and he does a fantastic job and does it quick.
I get my carpet from a local place which basically has them all on massive rolls and you pick what you want from what's there. They are great prices. If there is somewhere like that near you then I recommend doing it that way.
