So I called up Mazda to get a quote for a replacement window.  It’s was £1300.  A figure I would never ever expect this guy to shell out for.

I went back to the shop to explain how given time and space to really think it all over, AND considering I now know what the cost of a repair would actually be.  I now didn’t think that the simple refund was adequate compensation for the damage caused.

He was completely uninterested, and said that because he had shook my hand and I accepted the refund there and then.  He considers the matter closed.

Bit of a rubbish life lesson for me here.  It will definitely change how I handle any similar situations in the future.
I just think it’s a but unrealistic to be expected to be a walking parts list.

you still have the option of paying your £35 or whatever and go through the small claims procedure for your £1300

Him shaking your hand didn't reduce your rights in any way. Send him a letter before action saying you will take him to court for the cost of the window and see if he is any less uninterested.
