Ageism in comping?
Comments
-
The most likely thing is the OP was not best, the chances that the promoter gave a flying fig about their age is probably zero and zero is the difference picking/not picking them would have made to the station. As if one winner would matter to the station or people listening to it or using their website.
(for the 6 plus years I went for it I averaged 80 plus wins a year and that was either side of age 60)1 -
mjm. I suspect that all or most comps you won weren't ones that got you on air. I can say similarly, but I also went in for one comp, I think it was on Planet Rock, where the prize was to be a DJ for an hour, with your choice of rock music. I didn't win. I listened to the winners and noted that they all sounded younger than me. I don't know if that was agism, a coincidence, or even me not guessing the ages of the winners right. But agism happens it happens on TV entertainment shows all the time, so it's not impossible for it to happen on the radio. I doubt they would care what age prize winners are, generally, but it might make a conscious or subconscious difference if the winner is going to be aired.
Regardless, it's not worth getting narky about. It's just a friendly debate. You think differently to me, that's fine.I am brave, I am bruised

I never think about it again if I don't win a competition.
Depending on target age range of the audience one would expect most competition entries and therefore most winners to come from that age range.
Not sure what evidence of agism there is for ITV competitions (which are the closest to radio ones) but for entertainment programmes - which are not a random selection - the contestants generally need to pass auditions which would want to be selecting those believed to be popular with the good spending groups that advertisers want - so they could tend to be potentially younger - in some cases age limits are set in the application form.
(There are of course some competitions that require the more senior entrant)0 -

Let's put this to bed guys - we can all learn from each others' experiences but let's not get emotions up. We're all here to help each other in our shared interest/journey of comping.2
