Do I need planning permission for a shed in this position?

Hello

I have read that you need planning permission for a shed in front of your house- would this location count? I believe technically it is at the side of the house?
I have circled the boundaries in green and the proposed shed in red- just wanting to save money if possible!

I'll be interested to find out the answer too.  I lived in a semi detached house and our gardens both faced the road. My neighbour had recently erected a shed along his garden hedge, roadside.   I was in my garden and as a woman walked past, she shouted to me 'your neighbour needed planning permission for that shed you know'. I never looked into it, but perhaps she was right?

IMHO it is forward of the building line and therefore officially at the front of the house and would need planning permission.

I would agree - they’re not covered by permitted development. I wonder how many have actually done this though?

Well worth paying a visit to the local planning office and asking them (they may charge you for the pleasure!). That way, you’ll have a definitive answer. Won’t be a great cost to get the permission, but with it, you may be able to put up a more substantial outbuilding.

Assuming that face of the house is the front then as others have said, no, anything forward of the principal elevation would be considered the front.

It also looks as though it might be a relatively newly built development - in which case some or all permitted development rights may have been removed, or there could be plannig conditions further restricting what additional buildings can be added to the land.

It isn't clear from the image, but if the area you wanted to put the shed is in a car parking space then there may be a specific condition about keeping the parking spaces for parking cars and not using them for other things. If there is, then you'd need to apply to vary the condition, and there's no guarantee that consent to do this would be given.

Would this be a movable shed if someone complained?

It looks like the base will be an existing hard surface so you could put it up and see if anyone moans.

Move it behind your house line if they do.
