My friend and I wanted to go to the Grand Northern Ukulele Festival so we booked a two bedroom apartment a year in advance through Booking.com. We bought our Festival tickets and drove 120 miles to Huddersfield. We arrived at the apartment to find it had been withdrawn from Booking.com two months beforehand even though Booking.com took payment only one week ago. We phoned Booking.com who, after two hours provided an alternative apartment.
We arrived at the alternative apartment within 30 minutes to find it was a one bedroomed apartment and it was in a filthy condition with food and drink bottles and cans and dirty towels all over the floor and the unclean bed.
We rang Booking.com who said there was no other accommodation available in Huddersfield for that night. We were gutted to miss this Festival but we had no choice but to drive home as it was now 8pm. We told the apartment owner that it was not suitable and that we were not going to stay there.
We lost £160 Festival costs and were flabbergasted to find that Booking.com had charged us for the unsuitable apartment!
Booking.com have said we need to recover the £199.64 from the apartment owner. The apartment owner insists that it is Booking.com who should reimburse us.

We have spent days on the phone trying to get Booking.com to do the decent thing but to no avail.
We wonder whether anyone else has had similar issues with Bookin.com?

Your rights are with Booking.com.
If you paid with your bank card I'd contact your card provider for a full refund.
If you want reimbursement for the ticket cost then you'll have to take Booking.com to court. They're a Dutch company though so Dutch law not UK law applies I assume?!?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
If you paid by credit card I would make a S75 for the accommodation and claim the Festival tickets as consequential loss.

OP can you confirm, is the £199.64 the amount you paid for the first accommodation or did they cancel/refund that first booking and then charge the £199.64 for the second accommodation? In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0

Was there no other accommodation that you could have sourced elsewhere other than on booking.com?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I'm trying to get Booking.com to honour their price match guarantee but it's hard work. Don't think I'll use them again.0
