How old are  you? - What's your health like? Can you afford healthcare in your new country?

What work do you do? There are loads of dirt-cheap countries around, but you will only live like a king if you can continue to earn a 'western' salary.

    Socially, how will you cope?

I hear Germany is good, better rental system, higher pay and lower cost of living. If you love beer and sausage (stereotype) it could be for you.

be intense interesting to see how the cost of living compares to the USA and Australia. House prices in Aus are significantly more. Even with the increase pay. Though it a lovely place to live

Some parts of the UK are cheaper than others. Where are you at the moment?
What languages do you speak? Do you have skills that are in demand in the countries you would like to live? Have you factored in things like there being no NHS, so you would need to have health insurance. Would you be planning on coming back to the UK on retirement (in which case you need to have investments in place to cover the cost of buying when the time comes). And add in the cost of return trips to the UK for holidays and/or family occasions such as weddings and funerals.

Would you not need some knowledge of German to be able to work there?

Lived in Sydney for 20 years, lovely place but boy is it expensive . Always in the top 10 most expensive cities list. Be careful when looking at property sites. Prices are quoted at 10% under what they are likely to sell for, it’s an auction market. Rentals are quoted weekly not monthly

It's not just property. Insurance, utilities, food alcohol were at least 50% more sometimes double. The food was better but cost you more. Healthcare is better but you pay for it, fees for doctors appointments as well as medication.

It's also hard to get in, they operate a points system and only give visas for jobs on the wanted list and only to people below a certain age.

For most people it's a pipe dream

A lot of the tech jobs in Germany are in English.

It's bonkers, but I was on a building site in Berlin, and they were all speaking English. The Eastern Europeans know English, and the Germans know English. It's a Lingua Franca.

We made this sort of decision 20 years ago and moved to Highland Scotland.  So much nicer scenery and people, much more sensible population density, a lot cheaper than many other parts of the Uk.  Don't regret it one bit, lovely place to live.

For the best salary/cost of living/quality of life balance you can't do much better than the USA IMO, particularly one of the low/no tax states. I have colleagues in Texas who earn just shy of double what I do for doing the exact same job. They pay around 20% in federal tax (up to $250k PA IIRC!) and zero in state taxes, so less than half what I pay here in tax. They live in houses that are generally over twice the size of mine, and pay about 60% what I paid for mine (in Oxfordshire). Bills are all far cheaper and even cars are significantly less than in Europe. It's truly amazing how well off they are.
