Offer to buy shares - scam?

Options
My late dad had an investment in a company and every now and then he got a tiny payout. Today I've received a letter from D.F King / Link Group offering to buy the shares. I'm not really sure how many shares he had as I've not got round to dealing with that account yet.

The part I'm confused about says:

"[Company name, a member of bank group].

Tender offer in respect of £32,593,734 8.125 percent non-cumulative, non-redeemable preference shares issues by (company name)."

Any way, they go on about the shares my dad had in 97 and would like to purchase them at £1.17500 per preference share.

I'm not familiar with non crypto trading so can anyone shed any light on this?

I've got a couple of numbers to ring but I'm dubious to call them and I'm looking for a number on their website.

  • Hi,
seems a genuine offer, though you would be better to contact Bank of Ireland direct.

I've just spoke to them, I think that offer value is the combined value of all share holders. They're sending out a letter detailing how many shares my dad had, Sadly it won't be anywhere near 32 million 😂

    Hi,
    yes, that's combined value.

    Good luck.

I had the letter today. Mine are preference shares from Bristol and West . 250 of them when they had a takeover.

I goggled D.F/King/ Link Group and this came up. It may or may not be of help.

I would suggest caution. I know nothing about what was in your first post.

However, I do remember that a few years ago an advanced fee scam did the rounds. People where contacted by someone wishing to buy shares owned by their dead relative. The catch was that the mark had to part with some money up front (for some invented reason) before the sale could proceed. Then more reasons are invented to extract even more money from their victim.

Check out all information(contact details and phone numbers) they supply you with.

I have found the following useful for checking out web sites.

The OP appears to say they have 97 shares. That's kind of the flag that it's not a scam as £100 is not the sort amount that a scammer would normally bother with for a fake share buying scheme where the value is normally massively over what you could get selling on the market.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

You needn't be so coy about the name of the company as it helps assess whether it's genuine or not but, yes, it was announced to the stock exchange a couple of days ago, a tender by BoI re the outstanding Bristol & West preference shares (many years ago it bought B&W). I presume Link is the share registrar.

I read it as, had the shares since 1997,
"Any way, they go on about the shares my dad had in 97 and would like to purchase them at £1.17500 per preference share2.
