OP, it sounds like they have a policy of sending a warning for the first 'offence', and may fine next time, or maybe not because they have looked at the particular circumstances.

Personally, i think you did right. They could probably teach all the important things we need to learn at school in about 5 years, so going there from aged 4 to 16 is probably 7 years too long. Plenty of time to fit in a few holidays, and maybe teachers should look at teaching more effectively.

The fine, if one was issued, is an alternative to prosecution in court, so yes, plenty of people break the law and aren't prosecuted for all sorts of things.

care to share how you arrived at that opinion?

I'd like to hear that explained as well.
We'd all be educated and socially mature individuals before age 11 - on which planet ?

I'd love to know how also.

I always tried to teach skills that will sit for life on top of the curriculum we were given.

If Phil means that schooling is done mainly to pass exams and not teach life skills, I sadly completely agree with him and will quite openly state this is one of the main reasons I'm solving problems now instead of trying to teach others to do the same. As someone who has built a Europe-wide network of small businesses in sectors I have a personal passion to change, the UK education system does need an overhaul compared to many European counterparts, but that's another discussion for another thread.

It's probably worth bearing in mind that in my personal experience a lot of specialist areas with a current skills gap from experience is largely due to inadaptability to changing roles, especially post-pandemic.

I did not, nothing came of it. I think it depends on the area and also general attendance at the school from what I heard.

As education is obviously so vital that even missing a couple of days is going to have a devastating effect on the future of the children, why aren't teachers fined for going on strike?  They aren't denying one or two children their education, but an entire class of them.  That time can never be made back up either.  Maybe parents should tell the school that their children are on strike for a week?
  • I reckon this will be the school applying the policy consistently as laid down by their Local Authority in all situations where unauthorised abscences are concerned.
I doubt they pick and choose cases to prosecute.
How many schools offer a near end of summer term "educational trip" which is basically an excuse for a jolly abroad !!!
A quick visit to a couple of cultural opportunities to satisfy the learning experience aspect - then down to the beach or whatever.

Obviously they only got 5 years of education, that's how.
