Amex 'Dine Small' promotion

Amex is currently offering a variation of its "Shop Small" scheme, vendors are tagged separately on the AmEx merchant map as "Dine Small". My first attempt was rejected by the vendor as they don't take Amex, despite being on the map. A bit annoying but wee were going to eat there anyway.  Amex chat was  was not open to the idea of paying the £5 reward as some people have previously suggested, though they did ask me for the vendor and said they would pass it to the relevant team to investigate.

We had an email and its on the offers list. It does say its for a limited number of cardholders but the space where it normally says for how many is blank.

The amex small offers are getting worse.

    First it was £5 of £10, then £5 off £15 and £5 of £20.

They might have better offers in US but just giving crap to the UK.
  • I called Amex today.
The "Shop Small" promotion is returning in July.

My understanding is that card fees are generally much higher in the US, so there's more to 'give back' - part of the reason that Amex used to be much less widely accepted in the UK, because many merchants weren't prepared to pay the higher fees.

So US offers are often much better, but only as a result of higher costs hidden in the purchase price somewhere.
